The claimWhat Andy actually said

Speaking to BBC Sport a few months after January 2019 hip resurfacing surgery, Murray said he was walking around pain free for the first time in roughly two years. He framed the operation as being about ordinary daily life rather than a return to competition, saying he felt no pressure to play again. He did later return to the tour, but that was not the stated goal.

Why it mattersWhy this matters for longevity

Hip pain that stops walking, stairs and sleep is one of the most common reasons older adults lose independence

Choosing between resurfacing and total hip replacement is a real decision with different trade-offs by age, sex and activity level

A celebrity outcome from a procedure with strict candidate criteria is easy to over-generalise

The evidenceWhat the science says

A 2015 systematic review and meta-analysis pooling 1,898 patients found statistically significant improvements after hip resurfacing across SF-12 physical and mental scores, EuroQol-5D, WOMAC, Harris Hip Score, Oxford Hip Score and UCLA activity, with favourable patient satisfaction at a mean four years of follow-up. A 2019 systematic review of 27 studies and 4,182 patients found resurfacing produced equivalent patient-reported outcomes to total hip arthroplasty with higher activity scores and better return to high-level sport, plus lower dislocation rates.

None of this comes from randomised trials, and the same 2019 review is explicit that resurfacing is more expensive, technically less forgiving, and carries specific concerns about metal ion release and hypersensitivity. Its conclusion is restricted to young active men with osteoarthritis, and it calls for longer follow-up on implant survivorship. It does not support resurfacing as a default choice, and nothing here says surgery restores a professional athletic career.

TakeawayThe honest takeaway

The practical lesson

If hip pain is limiting ordinary daily activity, ask an orthopaedic surgeon which procedure fits your age, sex and activity level rather than which one a famous athlete had.

SupplementsThe supplement angle: Protein and vitamin D

Support a habit, do not replace one

Adequate protein intake and correcting a documented vitamin D deficiency are standard parts of supporting muscle and bone around orthopaedic recovery. Neither substitutes for rehabilitation, and supplementation decisions belong with the surgical team.

Supplements can support good habits. They do not replace sleep, movement, nutrition, or medical care. Talk with your healthcare provider before starting anything new.
