The claimWhat Elon actually said

Speaking to Joe Rogan in February 2021, Musk said he gets about six hours of sleep and that trying to sleep less made his overall output drop. He added that he does not find himself wanting more sleep than six hours. The remark was made in the context of describing meetings that often run until one or two in the morning.

Why it mattersWhy this matters for longevity

Six hours is widely repeated as a hard-charging executive norm, which makes it a habit people copy rather than test.

The most reproducible finding in sleep restriction research is that impaired people rate themselves as fine, so self-reported productivity is the least reliable measure available.

Sleep debt accumulates rather than resetting each morning, so a small nightly shortfall compounds across a working year.

The evidenceWhat the science says

In a controlled trial, adults held to six hours in bed for fourteen consecutive nights accumulated attention and reaction-time deficits comparable to going two full nights without sleep, while their own sleepiness ratings barely moved. Meta-analyses of prospective cohorts covering over a million people place short sleep, defined as six hours or less, at roughly 12 percent higher all-cause mortality and higher rates of coronary heart disease and stroke.

What the evidence does not support is the idea that six hours is optimal, or that a person can reliably feel where their own threshold sits. It also does not support the opposite overreach: these are population averages with wide individual variation, genuine short sleepers exist though they are rare, and observational mortality data cannot prove that the sleep length caused the outcome.

TakeawayThe honest takeaway

The practical lesson

If you are defending six hours on the grounds that you feel fine, that is the one piece of evidence the research says to distrust.

SupplementsThe supplement angle: Magnesium

Support a habit, do not replace one

Magnesium is sometimes taken for sleep quality, and trial evidence is small and inconsistent. No supplement has been shown to replace the hours themselves, so treat it as a minor variable at best and discuss it with a clinician.

Supplements can support good habits. They do not replace sleep, movement, nutrition, or medical care. Talk with your healthcare provider before starting anything new.
