The claimWhat James actually said
In a 2025 interview on The Tim Ferriss Show, Nestor was asked what someone should do after a positive screen for night-time breathing problems. He said becoming an obligate nasal breather comes first, built as a daytime habit before being carried into sleep, and described using a small piece of tape on the lips rather than sealing the mouth. He said he has used it nightly for about seven years and noted he has no affiliation with the tape products he mentioned.

- Rhee et al., PLOS ONE, 2025, systematic review of mouth taping in mouth breathing and sleep disordered breathing found limited low-quality evidence and a potential asphyxiation risk with nasal obstruction.
- Lee et al., Healthcare, 2022, preliminary study of 20 mouth breathers with mild obstructive sleep apnea reported a marked reduction in apnea hypopnea index and snoring with mouth taping.
Why it mattersWhy this matters for longevity
Mouth taping spread through social media far faster than the research did, so most people meet the claim without the caveat attached.
Untreated obstructive sleep apnea carries real cardiovascular and cognitive consequences, and a home fix that seems to help can delay a proper diagnosis.
It is a clean example of a plausible mechanism running well ahead of the evidence that it works.
The evidenceWhat the science says
One preliminary study of 20 mouth breathers with mild obstructive sleep apnea reported a substantial drop in the apnea hypopnea index and in snoring when the mouth was taped, which is the strongest single result available. Nasal breathing more broadly is associated with better humidification, filtration and nasal nitric oxide delivery, which is why the daytime habit Nestor describes is not in dispute.
What the evidence does not support is treating tape as a treatment. A 2025 systematic review concluded the available studies are few, small and low in quality, and specifically raised the danger for people with nasal obstruction, deviated septum or allergic congestion, for whom a closed mouth removes the only working airway. There is no long-term outcome data and no large randomised trial, and moderate to severe sleep apnea should be assessed and treated medically.
TakeawayThe honest takeaway
The practical lesson
Practising nasal breathing while awake is free and sensible, but do not tape your mouth shut if you cannot breathe comfortably through your nose, and get snoring or witnessed pauses properly assessed.

SupplementsThe supplement angle: None applicable
Support a habit, do not replace one
No supplement addresses night-time airway obstruction, and none should be substituted for assessment. Nasal congestion from allergy is a medical question worth raising with a clinician before any home technique is tried.
Supplements can support good habits. They do not replace sleep, movement, nutrition, or medical care. Talk with your healthcare provider before starting anything new.
