The claimWhat John actually said
Discussing a roughly 200-pound loss sustained over more than a decade, Goodman contrasted his old pattern of dropping 60 or 70 pounds in three months and then rebounding with a slower approach built on portion control, sobriety and moving every day. He has described walking, mitt work in a boxing gym and simply refusing to sit still as the core of it, adding that he is at an age where sitting still is no longer affordable. He frames it as energy for work rather than as a physique goal.

Why it mattersWhy this matters for longevity
The steepest health return on movement goes to people starting from very little, not to people already training hard.
Rapid weight loss followed by a return to old habits is the pattern most strongly linked to regain, and Goodman describes living through exactly that cycle.
Framing activity as energy for daily work, rather than as punishment, is the framing most likely to survive past January.
The evidenceWhat the science says
A harmonised meta-analysis of accelerometer studies found sharply lower all-cause mortality with more daily activity of any intensity, with the benefit curve steepest at the low-activity end. A pooled analysis of 15 international cohorts found mortality falling as daily step counts rose, levelling off between roughly 6,000 and 10,000 steps depending on age.
What the evidence does not support is treating this as a weight-loss mechanism on its own. Activity is a weak lever for losing weight and a strong one for keeping it off and for lowering mortality risk, and those are different claims. No trial has tested Goodman's specific combination, and his own account also includes sobriety and portion control, which cannot be separated out.

The practical lesson
Pick an amount of daily walking you would still do on a bad week, then protect it rather than escalate it.

SupplementsThe supplement angle: Protein and vitamin D
Support a habit, do not replace one
Adults losing weight in later life risk losing muscle alongside fat, so adequate dietary protein and vitamin D status are commonly discussed alongside activity. Neither substitutes for the movement itself, and blood levels are worth checking before supplementing.
Supplements can support good habits. They do not replace sleep, movement, nutrition, or medical care. Talk with your healthcare provider before starting anything new.
