The evidenceWhat the science says
Malik and colleagues, in a systematic review and meta-analysis, found sugar-sweetened beverage intake associated with weight gain in both children and adults, and Imamura and colleagues found a consistent association with incident type 2 diabetes that persisted after adjustment for adiposity. On the symptom side, de Oliveira and colleagues reviewed gastrointestinal complaints during exercise and documented high prevalence alongside nutritional strategies, including reducing high-fat, high-fibre and highly concentrated carbohydrate intake before competition, which is at least directionally consistent with what Messi describes.
What the evidence does not support is the causal attribution to chocolate and fizzy drinks specifically. Exercise-induced gastrointestinal distress is driven substantially by splanchnic blood flow redistribution, dehydration, heat and intensity, and the nutrition contribution is usually about timing, volume and concentration rather than one culprit food. Messi's change also happened alongside new professional support, different training and being several years older, none of which can be separated out. A single athlete improving after several simultaneous changes is a hypothesis, not a finding.

Sports drinks and electrolyte products are formulated around exercise hydration, and very concentrated carbohydrate solutions can themselves worsen gastrointestinal symptoms in some people. Concentration and timing matter more than brand, and persistent vomiting during exercise is a reason to see a doctor rather than to change supplement.
