The evidenceWhat the science says
A randomised controlled trial in Aging by Hadanny and colleagues gave healthy older adults 60 daily hyperbaric sessions and reported improvements on some cognitive measures, chiefly attention and processing speed, versus controls. A separate prospective trial from the same group reported increased telomere length and fewer senescent T-cells in isolated blood cells after a similar protocol. Hyperbaric oxygen itself is well established for conditions such as decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning, and certain non-healing wounds.
What none of this shows is a longer life. Both studies were small, short, run by overlapping investigators at a single centre, and used surrogate endpoints; the telomere study had no control group at all, and telomere length in blood cells is a marker whose relationship to lifespan in humans is contested rather than settled. There is no trial of hyperbaric oxygen with mortality or lifespan as an endpoint. There are also real costs: sessions are lengthy and repeated, chambers are expensive, and middle ear barotrauma is the common adverse event, reported in a meaningful minority of patients depending on compression rate.
