Of the six checks in Longevity Claim Verification, this is the one that fails most quietly. The study is real, the finding is real, the reporting is accurate, and the transfer to the reader was never examined by anyone.
The four things that decide transferability
Baseline status. The most important and the most ignored. Correcting a deficiency produces a large effect. Adding more to someone who already has enough usually produces nothing, and occasionally produces harm. A great many supplement findings come from deficient populations and are marketed to everyone.
Age. Interventions studied in people over 70 frequently do not transfer to people in their forties, and the reverse also holds. The underlying biology being targeted may not yet be a limiting factor.
Sex. Historically under-examined and still frequently unreported. Where an effect has only been shown in one sex, that is a limit on the claim, not a detail.
Existing disease. Results in people with a condition rarely transfer to prevention in healthy people. This is one of the most common overreaches in the field.
The question to ask of any claim
Who was in this study, and am I like them in the ways that matter for this mechanism? If a claim does not let you answer that, it has not given you enough to act on.
Why the deficiency case matters most
A large share of the supplement evidence base comes from populations selected for low levels of the thing being supplemented, because that is where an effect is most likely to be detectable and where a trial is easiest to justify.
The result is a body of literature that genuinely shows benefit, in people who were short of something, being used to sell to people who are not. Nothing in the chain is false. The population was simply dropped.
The healthy volunteer problem
The reverse case is a trial run in unusually healthy volunteers, which understates benefit for everyone else. People who enrol in longevity trials are not a random sample of the population, and a null result in that group is weaker evidence of no effect than it appears.
How Longevity Claim Verification handles it
The study population is stated on every check: size, age range, sex, baseline status, and any existing condition. Where a claim is being made for a population that has not been studied, the verdict is unsupported for that group, with the group it was shown in named so a reader can decide whether it applies to them.
