Following the link is already better than most, and an abstract is a compressed summary written partly to attract readers. It is the most reliable place for a real finding to acquire a slightly larger shadow than it deserves.

Six things, in order

1. The population, in the methods. Number of people, age, sex, and any condition or deficiency they were selected for. If a claim is being made for you and this does not describe you, stop there.

2. The design. Randomised, observational, animal, or in vitro. This decides what the study can prove at all, and it is usually stated in a single word most readers skim past.

3. The comparison. Against what? Placebo, nothing, a lower dose, or an alternative? A favourable result against a weak comparator is a weaker finding than the same result against a strong one.

4. The primary outcome. The one thing the study was designed to measure. If the headline finding is a secondary outcome, the study was not powered to answer it and the result is a hypothesis rather than a conclusion.

5. The absolute numbers. Look for actual figures, not percentages. If only relative changes appear, the absolute effect may be very small.

6. The authors own limitations. Usually the most honest sentences in the whole paper and the ones least likely to survive into any article about it.

The single biggest tell

A headline finding that is not the primary outcome. It means the study measured many things and the reported one is the one that moved, which is a very different claim from the one the study set out to test.

Phrases that are doing quiet work

"May contribute to" and "is associated with": association, not cause, correctly stated and usually dropped by the time it is repeated. "Trended toward significance": did not reach it. "Well tolerated": a safety observation in that group over that period, not evidence of benefit. "Compared to baseline": both groups may have improved, and the comparison you need is between the groups.

What an abstract cannot tell you

Whether the analysis was pre-registered, whether outcomes changed during the study, how many people dropped out, and who funded it. Those live in the full paper or in a trial registry, and they are frequently the details that decide how much the result is worth.
