The most common structure of a longevity claim is a striking single study, reported once, repeated everywhere, and never revisited when the follow-up work quietly disagreed.

Why single results mislead so reliably

Several forces push in the same direction, and none requires anyone to behave badly.

Publication bias. Studies finding something get published. Studies finding nothing frequently do not, so the published record over-represents positive results by an amount nobody can precisely measure.

Chance. Run enough analyses and some will produce a striking result with no underlying effect. This is expected behaviour of statistics, not misconduct.

First results run large. Effect sizes reliably shrink as studies are repeated in wider populations. An initial finding is more likely to be an overestimate than an underestimate, which is consistent enough to be treated as a rule.

The pattern to expect

A dramatic first result, a smaller second, and a third that finds little. This is the normal life cycle of a finding, and most public longevity claims are still quoting the first one.

What replication actually requires

Not the same team running it again, which mostly demonstrates that their method is consistent. A useful replication comes from an independent group, in a different population, and ideally with a pre-registered analysis so the outcome was chosen before the data were seen.

Independence matters most of the three, because the strongest sources of a spurious result live inside a single lab: its protocol, its equipment, its assumptions, its animals.

Reviews are not automatically better

A systematic review or meta-analysis pooling twelve studies sounds authoritative and inherits every weakness of what it pooled. If the twelve are small, or funded by the same interest, or all from one group, the pooled result is that weakness at greater volume.

What matters is what went in. A review is worth more than a single study only when the inputs are independent and of decent quality.

Why longevity is a hard case

Replication requires someone to fund an unglamorous repeat of an existing result. In a field where most funding follows novelty and much of the commercial money follows products already being sold, the incentive to run the confirming study is weak, and it is weakest where a product is already selling well.

How Longevity Claim Verification handles it

Whether a finding has been independently repeated is one of the six checks, and it is reported explicitly rather than folded into a general confidence rating. A single unreplicated study supporting a claim makes that claim unsupported, not false, and the entry says what would change it.
